All about our little duck flock

We decided we needed ducks in 2020. 12 ducklings, 7 Golden 300 Layers, and 5 of a variety picked by the kids came to live with us, along with 4 African goslings to join our 2 Toulouse geese. Our kids researched what they would need, and took on the majority of responsibility for their care (supervised by the grownups so nothing got missed).

Ducks are a little different than chicks to raise- they need water all the time, and they are MESSY. But they sure are cute and loveable. We got them outside on warm days, and they stayed together and followed the kids around.

We are growing our duck flock slowly, as we find more and more customers who appreciate the delicious eggs they produce. Our ducks live on pasture from sunup until sundown. Their goose friends protect them from aerial predators, and all are inside electrical netting to protect from larger land predators. We move them when needed- about once a week- to new pasture. In addition, we feed them a certified organic, soy-free feed.

We added 3 more ducks in spring of 2021, another 18 in fall 2021. In 2022, we added 15 Pekin ducks. We are expanding our flock slowly, building infrastructure to support it. We definitely see a need for this, as we have customers drive from quite a distance to buy our eggs. Ducks fit well into our systems- their manure is fantastic for growing, and they do a great job in our orchards.

More importantly, did you know that you can see through a duck’s nostrils to the other side?
