How to boil and easily peel farm fresh eggs!

by Sunday

One of the questions we get asked most is “is there any way to boil fresh eggs.” Because we all know, there isn’t, right? It’s a shell-sticking, egg-shredding exercise in frustration. When you make the switch to farm fresh eggs, you have to give up having boiled eggs. Or, do you?

There are several ways that do work, giving frustration-free, peelable eggs. The two biggest tips I have, regardless of your cooking method are: use an ice bath and peel immediately. We’ll look at boiling on the stovetop, using an instant pot, and steaming. Let me know in the comments if you have any other ways that work for you, or any other tips!

Methods

Boiling on the stovetop

  • Add a tablespoon or so of salt to a pot of water. The water should be high enough to cover the eggs by at least an inch without boiling over.
  • Bring the water to a boil.
  • Reduce the heat to a gentle boil.
  • Hold each egg half in the water for a few seconds before gently lowering it in.
  • Boil for 10 minutes after all the eggs are in for hard boiled eggs.
  • Use tongs to place the eggs in an ice water bath for 3-5 minutes.
  • Peel immediately and enjoy!

Instant Pot

  • Place 1/2 cup water in instant pot.
  • Add steamer basket.
  • Add eggs.
  • Set for manual, 5 minutes.
  • Natural release for 5 minutes.
  • Quick release.
  • Place eggs in ice water bath for 3-5 minutes.
  • Peel and enjoy!

Steaming

  • Add steamer basket to a pot with a tight fitting lid. Add about a cup of water, enough to reach bottom of steamer basket, but not touch the eggs.
  • Add eggs and lid.
  • Turn heat on high.
  • Set timer for 20 minutes.
  • When water boils, turn heat down to medium-high.
  • When time is up, use tongs to place eggs in ice bath for 3-5 minutes, then peel and enjoy!

Thanks for stopping by! Do you have any tried or true methods for boiling eggs? Tips? We’d love to hear from you in the comments!

  1. Thanks so much, I hadn’t tried steaming will do that now. Have you tried the oven method? It’s in the web don’t do it often and traveling right now. Place in muffin tins and bake that worked but didn’t try on fresh eggs yet. Love reading and have now saved your site. Love reading what and how you are doing things.

    1. Sondra and Steve, thank you so much for your support! I have not tried the oven method, just because steaming and the instant pot work so well! It’s great to have another option, though!
