March plans

March will be all about expansion. We have been providing, for our own family, all the chicken we can eat, and, for months at a time, all the vegetables. This is the year we expand significantly, beginning our journey from homestead to farm. Due to the nature of perennial planting, we don’t expect to see much in the way of harvest from the new plantings for 2-3 years.

Planting

In March, we will plant:

Elderberries- 60 more bushes

figs- 14 more trees

asparagus- another 200 crowns

blackberries- another 12 plants

grapes- 6 new vines

roses for rose hips-4. These are a hopeful planting. They are borderline in our climate, but we really want them.

Building

There is always so much on this list, and we have narrowed it down to the following….

Expand deer fencing (surrounds everything but the orchard) to include 2/3 acre

Expand grape arbor to hold a total of 20 vines

Build a pergola for more grape vines

Build a new chicken tractor for broiler chickens

At least one hugelkultur bed- this will probably get moved to early April.

Hugelkultur beds are raised beds, made from layering logs, smaller brush, organic materials such as grass clippings or leaves, with dirt on the top to grow in.
